"Every minute you spend wishing you did something is a minute you spend not doing it."
~Chris DiCroce
Tired of mortgage payments and unfulfilling jobs, Chris and Melody, along with their dog Jet, sold their house and almost everything they owned to move onto a 35 foot sailboat.
This is the story of a leap of faith and their attempt to break away. From making the decision, to the emotions of finding the right boat, selling everything, and finally telling friends, family, and bosses.
In the process, they soon discovered that their greatest triumphs often came from their greatest challenges.
Champagne wishes and caviar dreams fell prey to their bologna sandwich and Miller High Life budget. Boat breakdowns, tropical storms and over-extended bank accounts brought them face to face with the reality that things don't always go as planned, but sometimes... that's the best plan.
Light-hearted, humorous, and sometimes sad, this story will draw you in you with its unique look at life on a sailboat and the emotions that come with it.
If you've ever wanted to quit your job and move onto a boat, or have dreams of location independence and travel, this is a book you should read.
You Gotta Go To Know eBook Chris DiCroce
I loved this book. I've definitely got the bug and have been thinking about selling my condo and moving onto a sailboat for quite a while. I find myself in a similar work situation to Mr. DiCroce and of course I have the financial worries as well. I picked the (e-)book up late at night when I'm wont to indulge my fantasies, and found that I couldn't put it down until I finished it. What I liked best about the book was the reassurance that the long-term liveaboard lifestyle can be done without millions of dollars in the bank. If you've got the itch, then this book is for you.Product details

You Gotta Go To Know eBook Chris DiCroce Reviews
I wish this book had been available when I was contemplating whether or not to live my own dream. I might have 'lifted anchor' much earlier than I did.
Heartfelt and honest, 'You Gotta Go To Know' offers great inspiration and insight for anyone who questions whether they should follow their own dreams. If you are looking for a change, this book may just give you the push you need to 'go for it'.
If you are already living your dream and/or love sailing I also recommend that you give this a read.
I look forward to seeing additional books from Chris and Melody and more illustrations from Andrew.
All good
Good read. Can identify with the writer's comment about how fast life goes by and some of us are fortunate enough to wake up to the fact that the dream - whatever it might be for you- never dies. It wanderers around in that state between consciousness and sleep and if we are lucky something happens to make us remember the dream in great detail and bring it to life. For me it was lugging around all the bronze hardware from an old derelict sailboat that I wanted to rebuild when I was very young even though I had no experience in boating or building.Almost forty years later I built a boat and used that hardware.I hope the author and his partner get to continue living the dream and experience the joy of accomplishment based on his definition of joy which is great! The journey is the destination.
Full disclosure we have seen Chris and Melody from a distance as they passed us on the ICW and are friends on Facebook, but we have yet to meet in person. As sailors also, we are always telling others to "follow their dream" as we did. Chris has given a clear path and direction in doing that. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to make a change or waiting to make that leap of faith. Just DO it! This is well written and an enjoyable read. Judy and Stephen aboard s/v Bentaña
Chris writes likes he is sitting across the table from you. You believe all he says because he sounds like a long time friend. And he writes from years of hands on experience. Absolutely delightful.
I read this book recently because I am on a bit of binge of reading books about people that take up sailing and especially live aboard's. This book was good, but I never felt engaged in the story. It lacked the emotion that would draw me in. It is a fast read, I read a digital version so I do not know how many pages there are, but I would guess the average reader could read this in 2 hours or so. It is one of those good but not great books.
When it comes to boats and the sea, I've always been of the Groucho Marx persuasion. You know, "it's like being in prison with a chance of drowning" so some of the conversation about boat designers or keel types is lost on me.
But fortunately, in my opinion, this isn't so much a book about a sailing life as it is a book about being true to yourself, following your dreams and what creates/inspires/goads you to find the courage it takes to do that. And in that regard it succeeds wonderfully.
As talented a songwriter as Chris DiCroce is, it's no surprise that his first published foray into longer form prose is so well written. He draws you into his and Melody's story by honestly sharing the hopes, dreams, fears and motivations that led him to ditch one dissatisfying life for one that may or may not turn out to be his last one, but is certainly the one he should be living now. And he sure seems to have one hell of a girlfriend.
Not everyone lives with a wanderlust pulling them to “go." If you have that pull, I guarantee you'll enjoy this. But beyond that, for everyone who's willing to truly examine their life and ask if how it is now is how you wanted it to be, this is a book you should read. It doesn't ask anything of you but it may help inspire you to answer some of those questions you're asking of yourself. Best 99 cents I've spent in a long long time. Highly recommended.
The simple beauty of this book is that the writer went... and still doesn't know it all. He did learn to turn problems to adventures and mistakes into experiences. That's cool.
As a lifelong sailor, etc., I have an agreement with the underlying statement. You have to go. You'll never know it all though you will know enough. No amount of planning and analysis will replace simply going. The joy is in the going/doing.
When you are ready to make a change and accept the risk of change then... vacilando! A good read I will recommend to my sailing students.
